Plotting the 5-0

I recently turned 49.  That means I’ve been on earth for 50 years!  I’m of two minds on this:  One half is freaking out…  How did I get here this quickly?  The other, cooler side of me is wondering should I tackle some fantastic travel this year?  Or save it for my birthday year.

I have a revolving list of travel.  It’s been edited and updated for years, like a Netflix list.  (strike through are DONE)

  • Italian Bike and Cooking Tour
  • Annapurna Circuit, Nepal
  • New Zealand
  • Scotland
  • Australia
  • Iceland
  • Ecuador and Galapagos Islands
  • Southern Spain
  • Paris Apartment Stay (with my guy)
  • Panama
  • Northern Spain
  • Portugal
  • Paris Solo
  • Nepal Trek
  • Bali
  • Thailand
  • Hong Kong
  • South Korea

In the past I used travel as a time out on life.  When I felt trapped and overwhelmed, I’d plan a solo getaway.  I would leave for up to six weeks. I took most of that time to start missing home.
The last trip I took was Hong Kong-Thailand-Nepal.  Friends from home joined me along the way.  I ended up solo for three weeks.  Despite the company and the amazing locale, I was lonely most of the trip.  IMG_3551I even called my big sis in tears a few times.  Why?  Well I found my person, just before I left.  And I missed him.  Dammit!

She gave me great advice.  She said, don’t spend the entire time being unhappy.  Come home or find something to make you happy or you’ll ruin the whole trip.  I cut the trip short by several weeks.  It was a great decision.

I’m happy.  My desire to travel remains but has changed from a necessity to something to look forward to while enjoying today.

So, back to the big 5-0.  I think I’ll work on the Netflix list.  I’m leaning toward adventuring during my birthday year.   Also, I’m open to suggestions….

Takeaways

  1. Enjoy the present, it’s all we’re promised.
  2. Make your own Netflix list of where (or what) you want to go/do.
  3. Being older isn’t all bad.  The alternative is much worse.
