sometimes, running sucks…

I’ve had people ask me how to start running. I’m not a particularly talented runner but, I can run and I like it. Over the past 20 years, I’ve run a ton and I’ve completely stopped for periods of time. Here’s the only thing I know for sure. To start running you must do a bunch of uncomfortable, shitty runs.

Some things require some up front payment-running is definitely one of them. For a good bit of time, you’re a bad runner. Breathing hard and discomfort are a part of that. Even worse, there can be terrible weeks of hard runs even when you’re in shape.

“Forget the past.
Whatever feelings or fears you associate with running — leave them in your dust! “Forget about the coach who made you run as a punishment,” says Sara Johnson, a coach at Reality Running. “Forget about those childhood memories of not being ‘the athlete.’ Just because running wasn’t fun for you in the past doesn’t mean it can’t be now.”

–Emily Faherty

In the past few weeks I’ve been making myself get out and run. I’ve had a ton of shitty runs. On Friday morning, I literally made myself run two miles. Two….Seriously… The whole time my legs felt like angry, heavy logs I dragged down the trail. The very next day I had a pretty good run. I ran 13 miles without any significant pain. I think the two miler helped by waking up my leg muscles.

Why run? You might ask at this point. I mean, I’ve made it sound so appealing.

The goods…

After a few weeks of discomfort, there’s a moment that feels like you’re flying down the trail. Literally, everything is easy and relaxing. That moment feels a lot like being a kid again. The wind on your face, a little sweat and whole lot of joy. The run ends and you honestly say ‘that was fun’, even though you ran 10 miles.

After a bit, your body begins to change in a great way. Walking upstairs, keeping up with your kids or going for a walk suddenly become easier.

Brain space…

“Spending 30 minutes on a treadmill is enough to lift the mood of someone suffering from major depressive disorder, according to a study published in the journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. Even participants who moved at a walking pace to received the same mood-lifting benefit.”

Kevin Loria

Also…eventually people start to comment on your weight loss. Running is one of the best ways to slim down. Even better, you’ll notice the same eventually.

Takeaway, running or any other exercise will help your, mind body and soul. Get outside or to the gym or yoga studio or pool and give your bod some exercise.

  1. Oh man. When I started running again after 12 years (and an mva, herniated discs, chronic pain and 2 kids), I thought I was going to DIE. Literally. But you were and are right- it’s so worth it!!
