I chose nursing from a list my mother wrote in the air.   My father had passed away that year and I was lost, hiding out at home licking my wounds, looking for my next move.  She suggested “just get a job, become a secretary or nurse”… did.  I put aside my writing degree and went back to school for nursing.

That was fifteen years ago.  I’m ready to find a new path.  Wise woman and life coach Laura Todd  suggested focusing on what I want instead of what I don’t want.  That was a few months ago.  Sometimes, it takes awhile for things to sink in.   What I want is success.  But what is success?

According to Maya…

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”

-Maya Angelou

I have some work to do.

“…liking yourself…”

I’m 50/50 on that and would like to thank I’m making some progress.  Moving on…

“…liking what you do…”

I like the actual job; Nursing is very rewarding.  It’s hard but not because of the gross stuff people are thinking of when they say, “I could never do that”.  Wiping a bottom, death and wound care?  That’s the core job and most nurses, including me, actually don’t mind that part.

“…liking how you do it.”

I’ve been at the hospital for ten years.  The workload is growing, patients are getting sicker and the hospital is usually short-staffed.   Each year we’re being asked to do a bit more.  That means the job is changing.  I’m not sure for the better.

I’ve been making baby steps toward a change for the last year.  Maybe it’s time to make some moves.  I’ll keep you posted.
